Recent News AwardsBinimole Santhosh our Nurse Manager Wins Award for Study of the Decade Binimole completed a Master of Science Degree in Nursing in 2003. As part of the masters she had to submit a dissertation. Based on her work in village communities Binimole had noted a lot of young children she saw there had health problems associated with poor nutrition. She decided to focus her dissertation on this issue and conducted a survey to ascertain the extent of the problem. The findings of the survey encouraged Binimole to approach community health workers to devise food packages for the poorest in the community. This was combined with an education programme. The work Binimole did encouraged changes to be made to existing social supports for mothers and encouraged community workers to raise awareness of the issue. As a result of the work completed by Binimole health problems in young children associated with poor nutrition were significantly reduced. Because of the practical and valuable outcomes of her dissertation Binimole was recently told that she is to receive an award for her dissertation. The award is entitled "Study of the Decade" because of the impact the dissertation had on the state of Tamil Nadu (a state in India - approximately the size of Greece). TrainingEsker Lodge Nursing Home is dedicated to continuous staff training and development and acts as a learning centre for local students in conjunction with Cavan Institute who offer both FETAC Level 6 and 5 courses in the Caring and Health Services area and Iona College in Kells Co. Meath who specialises in FETAC Level 5 training for carers. In addition to the above Esker Lodge is committed to training and development for our committed team. Recent training programmes completed include:
We had a great day celebrating St Patrick's
with Desy Ronan, a regular fixture here. We also had an impromptu performance
from Mrs Webber's Irish Dancers and Malachy, our head chef on the tin whistle.
Kathy Durkin and her son, Andreas, dropped in
just after Easter to entertain us with their wonderful music and the afternoon
was a great success.
As always we would like to extend our heartfelt
thanks to Desy, Kathy and Andreas who are all so generous with their time.

Indian Cultural
Party
During the autumn, we had our first every cultural
awareness day, focusing on the Indian community who are a big part of the
Esker Lodge. As part of the event we had Indian music, poetry, dancing and
food. The event was a huge success in large part thanks to Binimole, our nurse
manager and all the staff nurses in Esker Lodge. It was great to see the nursing
home awash with colour from saris to traditional Indian decorations.
IT Training
for Residents
In winter, we arranged for IT and Internet training
for a number of interested residents. The training was a great success and
resulted in the nursing home acquiring 3 computers with Internet access. These
have now been made available to residents and regular IT/Internet activities
have been incorporated into our daily events. Our hope is soon our residents
will be comfortable enough to send and receive emails to and from family and
friends.

Daniel O'Donnell wowed fans by paying a surprise visit to Esker Lodge Nursing Home just before he was due to go on stage in Ballinagh on Bank Holiday Monday. Daniel, who is well known for his charitable works, knew that there were many residents in Esker Lodge who would love to see him live but unfortunately were unable to attend the concert. Being a trooper Daniel decided to pay a visit to the residents on his way to Ballinagh. The residents, relatives and staff of Esker Lodge got a huge surprise and greeted Daniel with the warmest of welcomes. Daniel spent a long time in the nursing home, making sure he went round to say hello and spend time with every resident. Many of the ladies in Esker Lodge were quite taken aback when Daniel O'Donnell came and sat by their bedsides. Everyone agreed that Daniel was a charming man who would always be welcome in Esker Lodge. A few residents who were able to attend his concert said they enjoyed the show immensely. Our Mission
Excellence in the delivery of compassionate
care to our residents
Our Method
Our Values Our core values are based on respect for the dignity, independence and privacy of every person in Esker Lodge. We will always encourage social interaction for residents and support their rights as individuals to make their own choices and express their beliefs. Quality Assurance
Esker Lodge is one of the first nursing
homes in the country to be awarded the EIQA (Excellence Ireland Quality
Assurance) Quality of Care Standard for Nursing Homes. The EIQA standard
was developed in conjunction with the Irish Nursing Home Organisation, now
Nursing Homes Ireland (which Esker Lodge is a member of), The Irish Society
for Quality & Safety in Healthcare and BUPA Ireland. Extensive global research
and best practice standards from the USA, Canada and Australia were used
in developing this standard. The standard incorporates these global practices
along with current Irish legislative and regulatory requirements. The standard provides for a comprehensive and rigorous approach to independent assessment and auditing of nursing homes across the broad spectrum of services. This is in addition to regular Health Service Executive and Health and Safety Authority audits, which are a legislative and regulatory requirement. Nursing homes are assessed under four critical areas, which include organisational commitment, employee engagement, support systems and processes and quality of life. Nursing home residents are interviewed throughout the audit for their opinions and feedback on their quality of care. In autumn 2006, Esker Lodge was a national finalist at the EIQA awards under the Nursing Home Quality of Care category. In autumn 2007, Esker Lodge built on our success of 2006 by becoming the outright winner of the Quality of Care Standard for Nursing Homes in Ireland. In Spring of 2009, we are delighted to say not only did we maintain our existing accreditation for 2009, but we enhanced our score and audit performance since our last inspection.
